SAWCHYN, Stephania (nee Sadowa)

November 22, 1917 June 15, 2020

With heavy hearts, we announce that our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on June 15, 2020, in her 103rd year after infection with Covid-19 virus. Predeceased by her husband Peter and cherished son Marko (Marjetka Vidmar), Stephania was mother to George (Tetiana Gerych) of Montreal and Irene (Ronald Doll) from New Jersey, USA; grandmother to Christina (Daniel Baum), Tamara, Marta, Melania (Andrew Nynka), Lydia (Yarema Belej), Andrew, and Larissa (Gordon Tomazic); great-grandmother to Malina and Nathanael. Her sister Yaroslava Vowk in Lviv, Ukraine survives her. Stephania was born in Liubachiw, Poland, and taught school in the town of Ulaziw, Poland. Married her husband engineer and son of the pastor of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Ulaziw. During WWII lived in Germany and Belgium before immigrating to Montreal and then to NYC to join her sisters. The family ran a restaurant and catering business at the Ukrainian National Home in the East Village, at the center of the Ukrainian community. After retirement Stephania and Peter traveled to Florida and Arizona, and reunited with her family in Ukraine. Her last years were spent at the CHSLD Polonaise Marie-curie-sklodowska Due to the current unprecedented circumstances, a Mass and memorial service will be held at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 6175 10th Ave., Montreal, QC, on July 24, the 40th day after Stephania’s passing. Interment of her urn will take place at a later date in New Jersey.
