Local gallery offers a wide-ranging collection of art and at-home services

- SUSAN KELLY

Summer is usually a time for home improvement. And in this atypical year, there is a surge of interest in adding the special touch that only a work of art can provide, says Valérie Sylvère, co-owner and director of Dimension Plus, an art gallery and artist agency with an in-house framing atelier.

“Very few customers are ‘just looking’ now,” she said. “There seems to be an urgency to make the home not only a safe and efficient place, but a beautiful one as well. And art is essential to that.”

Dimension Plus was founded in 1976 by Sylvère’s mother, Diane, still an active co-owner. The pair now carefully curate a wide-ranging collection of contemporary art, ranging from figurative to abstract. There are canvasses in diverse media, plus sculptures and handblown glass objects. The works are produced by over 50 artists, both established and emerging. Most are by Canadian artists, something the local business owners have always strongly believed in.

Taking in the collection can be daunting, as Dimension Plus boasts a sweeping 5,000 square feet of gallery space but given the ample room, social distance is easily maintained while touring. And, of course, sanitization stations and other strict safety measures are in place.

“We have staff on hand to guide you through it,” Valérie Sylvère said. “And because so much is involved in choosing a work, we can help you hone in on a style or artist that is the best fit for you and your home.”

At the corner of Decarie and Royalmount Avenues, the gallery lies in what is rapidly becoming the city’s go-to design district. A visit also provides a chance to tour the Carré Union Design Centre in which it is housed alongside upscale home furnishing providers. Bonus: A vast amount of available parking and a métro station nearby.

“We also provide at-home services,” she said. “We will come to your home or office with a selection of works you selected previously, either at our gallery or through the website. Sometimes you really have to see a work in place to really know if it is right for you.”

Delivery and installation services are also available. As well, Dimension Plus maintains its own dedicated framing workshop on the floor below the gallery space. It has gained a reputation in its own right over the years, and many customers return to have works reframed there. But, in the end, it really is all about the art.

“Buying art is about so much more than just filling an empty space with something colourful,” Sylvère said. “Artists put their heart and soul into their work. When you invest in it, you add that to your home, along with all the positive emotions.”
