Lexus LC 500 gets convertible option

- MATTHEW GUY Driving.ca

Lexus is broadening its LC line with a convertible flagship that will pack a 5.0-litre V8 making 471 horsepower. It will also have a luxurious interior trimmed with sumptuous materials, and the ability to make its roof vanish in 15 seconds.

The whole design closely mimics that of the LC 500 coupe. Its roof can be opened or closed at speeds up to 50 km/h, and is a soft-top design, with three layers of fabric and one layer of sound-absorbing material.

Inside, the LC 500 Convertible is equipped with a 10.3-inch high-res split-screen multimedia display. A standard transparent polycarbonate wind deflector helps restrict unwanted air from buffeting occupants during low-speed cruising, while other tweaks improve the cabin experience.

From rest, the 10-speed automatic will crack off gears with sufficient alacrity that highway speeds are yours in just 4.6 seconds.

The convertible’s suspension was tweaked to complement the subtle changes in weight versus the coupe. The adaptive system continually adjusts damping control in response to driving operation and road surface conditions. Some components have been lightened or use new materials in a bid to shed weight.

For those seeking even more exclusivity, Lexus is bringing just four Inspiration Series ragtops to Canada. The limited-edition model will wear a special colour combination and be fitted with a couple of performance goodies.

Look for this snazzy droptop in the driveways of our nation’s elite later this summer, starting at $122,500.
