Rules set for municipal byelections on Oct. 4

-

Quebec's director general of elections announced measures to be put in place as nine municipalities run byelections on Oct. 4 that were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Masks will be mandatory except when voters are verifying their identity. People who want to can bring their own pencils to the voting booth.

Advance voting will take place over three days, Sept. 26-28, and opening hours will be extended.

Some electors can ask to vote by mail, for example if they are potential carriers of COVID-19.

No polling places will be installed in private seniors' residences or public long-term care centres, rehabilitation centres or hospitals.

The elections were suspended by order of the government from March 14 to Aug. 6 because of the public health emergency.

About 20 municipalities were set to hold elections, but most filled vacant positions by acclamation.

The remaining nine municipalities are:

■ Ancienne-lorette

■ Arundel

■ Leclercville

■ Pointe-des-cascades

■ Preissac

■ St-damase

■ St-Marc-de-Figuery

■ Ste-clotilde

■ Vaudreuil-sur-le-lac
