His series of epic fantasy books became one of the most popular TV hits of recent times as the HBO series “Game of Thrones.” He won a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award for his 1979 novelette “Sandkings,” and he won a host of other sci-fi and fantasy awards thereafter. In 2011, he was included on the Time 100 list of the most influentia­l people in the world. “Game of Thrones, for which he was an executive co-producer, won four Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstandin­g Drama Series.
