Lucid reveals electric Air sedan

- ALEX REID Driving.ca

Lucid took the covers off its all-electric “Air” sedan in early September, bringing to the segment another battery-powered California car to take on Tesla.

While there are no litres-of-displacement in the engine, there is an abundance of litres-of-volume in the cargo space. Lucid says it has the largest EV “frunk” — or frontof-car trunk — in the segment, at 280 L, helping it net a total 739 L of cargo space.

But what really matters is the drivetrain, and Lucid has fitted the production Air with a wonder of a system. In fact, its charging unit is called the Wunderbox, and with 900-volt charging support, it can replenish 482 kilometres of range in only 20 minutes.

The Lucid Air “Dream” model features an incredible 1,080 horsepower; the power plant allows the zero-to-96-km/h sprint to happen in just 2.5 seconds, and cover the quarter mile in 9.9 seconds, faster than any other production sedan.

Obviously, the most important thing about an EV is the range, and the Air offers 832 km of distance per charge in its Grand Touring trim. Dream trims won't hit that mark, instead reaching 748 km with the upgraded 21-inch wheels, or 809 km with Aero wheels.

Pricing for the Air will start below US$80,000, but the vehicle won't be available until 2022. Dream Edition models will be available in 2021, but will cost US$169,000. Lesser Touring models should hit 2021 order sheets for US$95,000, with Grand Touring editions priced at US$139,000.
