GEORGES, Philippe

1937 - 2020

-

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Captain Philippe Iskander Georges on November 28, 2020. Phil leaves behind Pam, his wife of 50 years, and a multitude of friends in Canada, England and around the world.

Born in Heliopolis, Egypt, Phil left home at the age of 15 to pursue his career as an officer in the Merchant Navy. He attended James Watt College in Scotland and then Warsash Maritime Academy, Southampton to attain his master mariner qualification. Phil was at sea for 17 years travelling to every corner of the globe. He came ashore in 1969 to continue his career with Saguenay Shipping in Montreal and later Canadian Pacific. In later years, Phil became a Management Consultant and with his extensive knowledge of maritime transportation worked on many projects including ones for the Auditor General, NATO and the Newfoundland Government.

Phil was a larger than life personality: highly intelligent, a fountain of knowledge on world affairs, a lover of the arts, antiques, music and an avid collector of maritime paintings and memorabilia. He loved to socialize and, together with Pam, warmly welcomed and entertained friends from far and wide to their home and cottage. Christmases will not be quite the same without the traditional “Georges” Christmas party! For the last 20 years, Phil and Pam have spent many months in England, a place Phil loved and where he will be sorely missed.

A celebration to honour and remember Phil’s remarkable life will be held next year when circumstances permit. Condolences may be sent through the Kane and Fetterly website.

Our appreciation is sent to the staff of CHSLD Chateau Westmount who cared for Phil during the last year of his life, with a special thank you to Ethel for her tender loving care. Likewise, to the staff of the Jewish General Hospital for their professionalism and kindness during his various hospitalizations in recent years and latterly with Covid-19. A token of sympathy can be expressed in a donation to support the Mariners’ House of Montreal or a charity of your choice.
