Coroner to probe death of teenage boxer
The Quebec coroner's office will investigate the death of Mexican teenage boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, who died Thursday following injuries sustained in a boxing match in Montreal last weekend.
Quebec Public Security Minister Geneviève Guilbault announced the investigation on Friday.
“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata,” Guilbault wrote in a tweet. “(The coroner's office) will conduct an investigation into the probable causes and circumstances leading to the athlete's death.”
Zapata, 18, was hospitalized and in a medically induced coma following her match in Montreal Saturday night against Terrebonne's Marie-pier Houle at IGA Stadium.
She had suffered a series of severe blows with seconds remaining in the fourth round and went into convulsions while on her feet before the ringside physician rushed to her side. Her death was announced by promoter Groupe Yvon Michel on Thursday.
