Enlightened interior design inspired by nature and simplicity

- URSULA LEONOWICZ

For the principal interior designer of Symphonia Viu, the project’s location next to a wooded area and between a golf course and the St. Lawrence River, was just one of two main points of inspiration when it came to the design process, even though it was a very important one.

“The starting point of the design was the location and then the architecture; the interior design flowed from both of those,” says Alain Desgagné, the founding designer at Innédesign, who’s worked on a number of projects in the Caribbean in addition to his designs here, making him ideally suited to the 43-storey luxury waterfront development on the southern tip of Nuns’ Island.

“It’s the same with the views; they set the pace for the design in the sense that we want them to remain in the foreground. So, everything else has to be very soft, light and neutral, with as much fenestration as possible.”

Desgagné has been working alongside architect Roch Cayouette from Provencher_roy and developer Kevin Robinson, from Développements Symphonia, since the first Symphonia condominium was completed in Nuns’ Island in 2014.

A soaring tower mostly made of glass, Symphonia Viu, as its name implies, is all about the views. What makes it so classic — and in turn, such a great investment — is the signature style that was developed to reflect and enhance its natural setting.

With unobstructed views of the water, golf

course, downtown and the project’s private garden, the units are surrounded by large panoramic windows in the main living areas, including the kitchen and living room, as well as design elements and a neutral colour palette that highlight the landscapes.

“The thing about natural, neutral colours like white, beige, grey and black, is that they let their surroundings speak for themselves and integrate seamlessly with each other, so they don’t compete for attention,” explains Desgagné, who worked with the developer’s inhouse designer to come up with three different collections for the project’s 223 units.

“With Symphonia Viu, the colours are already there, with the sky, and the water, and the trees, and they constantly change over the year as the seasons change.”

Exceptionally large units with 10 ft. ceilings, two luxurious bedrooms, one deluxe master bathroom and additional lighting options make up the first collection that’s known as Orchidée, while spacious three-bedroom units with 11+ ft. ceilings, a master bedroom with a dressing area and generous closets, a lavish en-suite bathroom and sweeping balconies make up the Lotus collection.

The penthouse collection, which includes six multi-storied penthouses that measure up to 4,200 sq. ft. and have 11+ ft. ceilings, is not only luxurious but also wellthought out and highly livable, offering several large outdoor terraces for entertaining and relaxing, each with their own views and sun positions to be enjoyed at different times of the day.

“If you look at the three collections and the finishes they come with, you could mix any of their components and they would still pair well together, because they were designed as part of an overall vision,” Desgagné says.

Materials with soothing, natural earth tones were used for the kitchen finishes, with the focal point being concrete grey and dark stone with subtle patterns and veining.

“The units have a very open concept and when everything is out in the open like that, it’s important that the space not be visually cluttered, which is why the kitchens were designed to be minimalist with ample convenient storage for appliances and cookware,” says the designer.

In the bedrooms, clothing is neatly tucked away in the large builtin closets, eliminating the need for dressers and armoires that clutter the space needlessly and ultimately block the exquisite views.

“Your home shouldn’t overshadow you or your personality; the perfect design should provide a base that’s both practical and esthetic for you to live in and express yourself.” says Desgagné.

“Symphonia VIU’S streamlined designs and open spaces offer the perfect canvas for the addition of signature pieces reflective of the owner’s taste, while showcasing the views as the main event.”

For those who appreciate elegant and thoughtful design, Symphonia Viu is a welcome addition to the entire symphony of buildings — Symphonia, Symphonia Pop and Symphonia Sol — that came before it.
