HEHR WITHDRAWS FROM MAYORAL RACE CITING ILLNESS

- Postmedia News, The Canadian Press

Former Liberal MP Kent Hehr, pictured, has announced he's withdrawing from the race to become Calgary's next mayor after falling ill. In a news release, Hehr said he began to feel sick on Sunday morning and he immediately suspended all campaign activities. He is awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test. “What further complicates things is that people with spinal cord injuries are a higher risk for COVID complications,” wrote Hehr, pictured. “Although I am double vaccinated, given the number of people with the Delta variant in Alberta and the ICUS being at or near capacity, the risks to my health are compounded.” Hehr became a quadriplegic when he was hit in a drive-by shooting. He ran successfully for the federal Liberals in the riding of Calgary Centre in 2015. He lost in 2019.
