Phillies land free agent outfielder Schwarber

-

Outfielder Kyle Schwarber agreed to a four-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies worth “just under $20 million” per season, The Athletic reported Wednesday.

The agreement is pending results of a physical.

Schwarber, 29, last season was selected to the all-star game for the first time, as a member of the Washington Nationals. The Boston Red Sox then acquired him before the trade deadline. He finished the season with 32 homers, 71 RBIS and a .266 batting average in 113 regular-season games.

He struggled for Boston in the loss to the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series, batting only .120, with one homer and four RBIS in six games.

Schwarber was a member of the Chicago Cubs when they won the World Series in 2016. He played in two Series games, going hitless in four at-bats, with a walk.

Schwarber's best season was with the Cubs in 2019, when he had 38 homers, 92 RBIS and batted .250.

For his seven-year career, Schwarber has 153 homers, 350 RBIS, a .237 batting average, a .343 on-base percentage and a .493 slugging percentage.

The Phillies also announced the re-signing of outfielder Odubel Herrera to a one-year deal. Terms were not disclosed.

Herrera, 30, batted .260 with 13 homers and 51 RBIS in 124 games last season.

An all-star in 2016, he is a .274/.329/.422 hitter with 73 home runs, 284 RBIS and 62 stolen bases in 755 games with the Phillies since 2015.

Japanese outfielder Seiya Suzuki is set to join the Chicago Cubs on a fiveyear deal reportedly worth $70 million.

Suzuki, 27, is considered a middle-of-the-order bat, with his 38 home runs last season in Japan and a .319 batting average.

Suzuki won the 2019 Central League batting title and is a past home run derby champion known for tape-measure shots who could pepper Waveland Avenue at Wrigley Field.
