CLUTTER-FREE CLOSETS

Spring clean your way to stylish organization

- KARL LOHNES

After a very long winter, I'm looking forward to some spring cleaning. The first thing I'll do is reorganize all my closets. If yours are like mine, they'll be stuffed to the brim with things that I probably haven't used for a few years.

I think there are two types of people: those that throw things in the closet and hurriedly shut the door, and those who keep a closet in check by tidying and sorting daily. I have to admit that I am the former type. But with high hopes for organized, clutter-free closets at last, I'm looking forward to adding efficiency and style behind closed doors.

If you also want to upgrade your closets, then read on — I'll show you how to add more storage with efficient tools that every closet needs, and (spoiler alert) I might just have an idea that rips the doors off.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

The first thing to do with any overstuffed closet is empty it. Remove every single item and give the interior a good vacuuming and dusting, and maybe even a fresh paint job to brighten it up.

After that, it's time to purge! Sort items into what to keep, and what should be thrown away or donated. I like to use the oneyear rule — if you haven't used it in a year, you don't need it. Your goal — if you haven't spring cleaned your closets in a long time — should be to clear out at least 30 per cent.

Finally, organize your keepers, setting aside seasonal items, which can be stored on the top shelf of the closet until you need them again.

EFFICIENT UPGRADES

No matter what size of closet you have, there are a few inexpensive upgrades that will make it more functional, and the perfect time to add them is when the closet is empty. A battery-operated LED light that adheres to an inside wall will brighten a dim closet, and a handy steamer is a great investment if your closets are jam-packed with clothing.

Steamers create a powerful steam that lets you eliminate wrinkles and quickly freshen fabrics. I also put them to good use smoothing out bedskirts, drapes and other fabrics around the house while spring cleaning.

Additional smart features to improve closet organization include over-the-door shoe racks (they're great for storing silk scarves, jewelry and accessories), a hook for your everyday robe and don't forget multi-level hangers that keep more clothing organized vertically.

SHOW OFF YOUR TIDINESS

Are you one of those neat, ultra-organized people who doesn't overcrowd your closets? Take inspiration from a trend in hotel rooms by removing the closet doors — it makes small or cramped spaces appear larger and open.

Of course, this will expose what's inside, so you'll have to commit to keeping the closet organized and tidy, and ensure that it's also a stylish looking area. Wallpaper or paint the inside, add a stylish lamp, use decorative shelving and baskets, and only display your most Instagrammable purse, coat or boots. Here's a tip: This spring, the organizing section at Homesense is brimming with stylish storage accessories that help to spruce up the look of overcrowded spaces. While expanding the look of your space, you'll show off how tidy and efficient you are.

MAKING THE MOST OF A SMALL SPACE

Want to add more shelving to your existing closet? Here are three easy ways.

My favourite trick is to install a narrow shelf about 12 inches above the floor of the closet. It will give you a second level to store shoes or bins.

Install another shelf about 12 inches below the ceiling in the closet. Chances are, there's a lot of wasted space up there that can be used for off-season items.

Install shelves up one side wall of the closet interior. The loss of those few inches of hanging space will be balanced by the gain of five to six shelves for many baskets.
