Shapovalov, Andreescu fall at Madrid Open

-

Britain's Andy Murray knocked off No. 14 seed Denis Shapovalov of Canada in three sets Tuesday at the Madrid Open to set up a match with Novak Djokovic in the Round of 16.

Murray defeated Shapovalov 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the third round, where he'll face Djokovic for the right to advance to the quarter-finals. The top-seeded Djokovic breezed past Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-2.

It'll be the first match between Murray and Djokovic since 2017.

“In theory I should have no chance in the match. He's obviously No. 1 in the world (and) I'm playing with a metal hip, so I shouldn't have a chance in the match,” Murray said. “It's a great opportunity for me to see where my game's at and to play against him again.”

Djokovic of Serbia leads their head-to-head meetings 25-11.

“He's moving well, playing better and better. It's really fantastic to see, because he's an important player for our game,” Djokovic said. “He's made his mark in the history of our sport by winning multiple slams and gold medals and (reaching) No. 1 of the world. He's one of the most important names that we have.”

In other Round of 32 action Tuesday, No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev of Russia defeated Brit wild card Jack Draper 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 and seventh-seeded Carlos Alcaraz of Spain cleared Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 7-5.

On the women's side, Jessica Pegula outlasted a pair of delays to storm past Canadian Bianca Andreescu 7-5, 6-1 and into the quarter-finals.

Pegula, the No. 12 seed, now has reached seven quarter-finals of the 11 WTA 1000 tournaments played since the 2020 Western & Southern Open, along with the quarters of the Australian Open in 2021 and 2022.

The American twice fell down a break in the first set but rebounded to take the lead 6-5 in a set that saw her have 17 break chances, converting three of them.

The final service break came with Andreescu serving down 6-5 when play resumed after the Canadian needed a medical timeout for a bloody nose. She fought off four set points but lost her serve, and the set, when her backhand shot was long.
