Halloween was safe for the kids

- By Carol Ferguson for Moose Jaw Express

Moose Jaw EMS began a new safety initiative for the 2012 Halloween and had off-duty EMS paramedics roaming the streets talking to the trick or treaters and assessing them for their attentiveness to safety. These paramedics were looking for costumes that did not restrict vision and or movement, costumes that were easy to see in the dark, good foot wear that was nonrestrictive and the use of small collection containers. If the trick or treaters passed the test, they were awarded a coupon for an ice cream treat from Dairy Queen and if not, they were helped to meet the criteria and then awarded the treat. A few parents who accompanied their children were also awarded with the coupon. Most were dressed and acted in a safe manner but the few that were not were helped to meet the criteria. The nite was very well-received and successful and all those that received the DQ treat-coupons were very excited. Ems did not respond to any Halloween incidents. With that we would like to applaud the Moose Jaw residence for ensuring the safety of our children!!! Moose Jaw EMS would like to thank our Paramedics who gave of their time to help make this nite so successful; a special thanks to our local Dairy Queen for supporting our safe Halloween initiative. 175 coupons were given out!! Ray Francis, ACP Director of Community Relations Moose Jaw and District EMS
