MLAS COLUMN - MOOSE JAW NORTH Good Things on the Go in Saskatchewan
Last week Minister June Draude was in Moose Jaw to officially open the Plaxton Ridge Condominiums, a 15 apartment style unit located on Main Street South. Plaxton Ridge was constructed with the assistance of the Saskatchewan Housing Plan – part of the five point housing program released by our government earlier this year.. The Government of Saskatchewan provided $1.9 million in financial assistance through the HeadStart on a Home program. Our government’s incentive plan for home construction is a part of the Saskatchewan plan for growth. The number of residential building permits in our province has increased by 79.1 per cent over the last year placing Saskatchewan third among the provinces for growth in this sector. Regina saw the highest increase in residential permits of all Canadian cities. That city experienced a 225 per cent increase in residential permits. The government of Saskatchewan has also announced that it will be selling 336 acres of land northwest of Regina and redirect the monies from this sale for the building of homes for low to moderate income families. Not only is Moose Jaw doing well in the construction sector, I am very pleased to see the number of high school students from our city who received $400 each through the Saskatchewan General Proficiency Awards Program. This program recognizes the top 500 students who graduated from high school last year. Every high school in our city had an award winner. There were 18 students who received the award. Congratulations for your hard work! I believe the number of students also reflects the hard work of the educators in our city from all three school divisions. Our province also recently recognized 83 recipients of the Saskatchewan Scholarship of Honour. This scholarship is awarded to returning soldiers, who are current or former residents of Saskatchewan who have participated in Canadian Forces missions since January of 2001 and are enrolled in a recognized postsecondary institution. The award was created to honor the commitment these soldiers made for their country. Spouses and children of permanently injured or deceased soldiers may also apply for the scholarship. Finally, the Government of Saskatchewan is pleased with an agreement the federal government has made that will allow Canadian uranium (which is all from Saskatchewan) to be exported to India, the world’s largest democracy. India has one of the world’s major nuclear programs second only to China. India has announced plans for the building of 12 new reactors by 2021. Uranium production in Saskatchewan is expected to nearly double in the next four years.
