Child Fitness Tax Credit

-

694-5500 Since being elected in 2006, our Government has established a number of important new tax relief measures including the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit. We all want the best for our children, and many parents have to make tough decisions about extracurricular activities. We want to support Canadian families and help children realize their full potential. The Children’s Fitness Tax Credit helps with the cost of organized sports and fitness programs for children, and we all know that children who lead active lives often realize long term health benefits – which are good for all of us. With this in mind, I think it is fantastic news that over 1.5 million Canadians claimed the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit in 2011. Reflecting the great diversity in the types of physical activities enjoyed by Canadians, the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit is available for a wide range of supervised activities. Parents are able to claim eligible expenses of up to $500 for each child under 16 at the beginning of the year. Our Government has introduced a number of other important tax relief measures to support Canadian families. The Child Tax Credit, available since 2007, provides tax savings for each child under the age of 18. We have also introduced the Working Income Tax Benefit, the Canada Employment Credit, the First-time Homebuyer’s Tax Credit, Children’s Arts tax Credit, small business Hiring Tax Credit and so much more. This stands in stark contrast to the plans of the NDP, who voted against the tax relief measures which were included as part of our Government’s Economic Action Plan. We understand that families can have a difficult time making ends meet, and that’s why we will continue to offer programs that help Canadians. That’s why the average family of four now receives more than $3,000 in extra tax savings and why the federal tax burden for all Canadians is now the lowest it’s been in half a century. That’s why our Government remains committed and focused on economic growth, the creation of jobs, and the long term economic prosperity of Canadians. I encourage all of you to check the Canada Revenue Agency’s website for more information about all of these credits and any other tax savings you may eligible for. Remember, save your receipts for 2012 as you can start claiming these credits on your income tax benefit return when you file your taxes in early 2013. As always, I invite constituents to contact one of my constituency offices to inquire about Government of Canada policies, programs or services - Moose Jaw at 691-3577 or Regina 790-4646. We would be pleased to assist you in any way possible.
