Generous scholarships awarded to deserving artists
On Saturday, August 23rd, the Larry Wilson Scholarships were presented to artists studying dance, drama, voice, musical theatre, instrumental performance and literature. Although there weren’t recipients in all categories due to a lack of applications in certain ones, four awards of approximately $2,200 each were given to three students to continue in their educational nuances. The 2014 Larry Wilson Scholarship awards are as follows: Lawrence Wilson Scholarship for Drama Award: Courtney Lorne Hunter Gerald B. Wilson Scholarship for Musical Theatre: Laura Olmstead Sylvia Wilson Scholarship for Vocalists: Keyanna Burgher Lawrence Wilson Special Literary award: Keyanna Burgher Many of these studying artists are unable to be present to receive their scholarships but the families are notably appreciative of the generous awards. Many of those that received a 2014 scholarship have also been recipients in previous years. Larry Wilson originally purchased the historic Capital Theatre building and then proceeded to donate it to the city of Moose Jaw to be a part of what has become the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre. The theatre was aptly named after his mother, Mae Wilson. He then created scholarships for young people from the area to help them pursue a career in the arts. With the help of Gary Hyland, Wilson set us scholarships to be available annually for students ages 17 and over who are studying in the arts. These awards mark the sixth year anniversary of the awards presentation. Each scholarship awarded was named after one of his brothers and sisters. They include awards in drama, traditional dance, contemporary dance, musical theatre, instrumentalists and vocalists. A seventh award was added in literature ( which can include writing, journalism and screen writing). Larry Wilson passed away before the scholarships were first awarded. His sister, Marlene (Wilson) Jerred was present to officially award the 2014 recipients in each category, as well as Chairperson of Arts in Motion, Regina SagalHendry, who officiated the awards. Anyone studying in the arts is encouraged to apply for a Larry Wilson scholarship, available annually. information visit website www.artsinmotion.ca .
