Silver Star Salvage supporting veterans

- By Scott Hellings

It is all about helping the environment, while also supporting the Canadian Forces. Throughout the month of August, Silver Star Salvage has been donating the proceeds from all the metal dropped off at their recycling bin in support of 15 Wing Fellowship. The funds will go directly to supporting the Fellowship’s upcoming concert and car show, which will be held September 13 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 15 Wing. Cal Anderson, owner of Silver Star Salvage, says his business supports different community groups each month. Normally, groups receive a portion of the proceeds but this time 100 per cent of the funds will go directly to 15 Wing Fellowship. “We always support our troops 100 per cent. So I decided that the funds we get from everything that goes into the bin would be donated to the Fellowship,” said Anderson, who adds that he and his staff wear red t-shirts every Friday in support of the troops. “We support them because they look after us and keep us safe…We like to donate to something every month. I heard that this event for the troops was coming up and, because I’m into old cars, I thought I would kill two birds with one stone.” The members of 15 Wing Fellowship certainly appreciate Silver Star’s efforts. In fact, Chairman Rick Spanjer says that the business community, at large, has done a great job of supporting the event.

“The businesses in Moose Jaw have been absolutely fantastic. All of the car dealerships are brining their 2014 vehicles to the show and they have all sponsored us with donations. There isn’t one business that I talked to that has turned us down. It gives me goosebumps actually,” said Spanjer. “I go into these places to talk to the owners and I pretty much get an okay within the first minute of laying out what we are going to do.” Anderson says that people have done their part to support the cause by dropping off a lot of materials at Silver Star Salvage. “People are awesome. The people have really picked up on it and I think it is going to be a good bin this month,”

be on display. said Anderosn. “We will definitely do it again if the car show becomes an annual event.” 15 Wing Fellowship is a board comprised of ex-military members and civilians that are dedicated to enhancing the relationship between 15 Wing and the city of Moose Jaw. They also raise funds that support our troops, veterans, and their families. Previous fundraising events include a special musical night at Timothy Eaton Gardens that provided funds to the Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC). Cars of all makes, models, and vintages will be on display. Spanjer says that any vehicle that is of “special interest” is invited to take part in the show. Spanjer says they have been attending car shows throughout the area to promote the event. He adds that the group’s Facebook page has received several thousand hits and they have certainly generated a buzz. He expects approximately 100 cars to In addition to the cars, the event will feature military displays. Spanjer says that a special surprise has also been lined up for the event. A barbecue concession will be provided by the Elks. Of course, the other big highlight of the day will be a performance from the Uncoolas. It promises to be a fun-filled day that the whole family will enjoy. An official donation from Silver Star will be made at the car show.
