Big plans for 2018! Legion to celebrate 100 years of Remembrance Day in Moose Jaw
Several persons came together at the Royal Canadian Legion, Moose Jaw Branch No. 59 for the annual New Year’s Levee on Jan. 1. Military members, family and friends, along with some dignitaries and members of the community came out to celebrate another year. They were treated to lunch and complimentary ‘Moose Milk’ as they socialized with each other for three hours and exchanged good wishes for the New Year.
Legion President Roy LaBuick said it was nice to see members of the community out and wishing each other the best for the New Year, while enjoying the featured Moose Milk. “Persons came in to ring in the New Year with this open house. Military persons and other members of the community, as well as dignitaries came together to socialize with everyone and have a drink of our complimentary Moose Milk, along with lunch. We just want to wish the community the best for the New Year and look forward to great things this year,” said LaBuick. This year will be a big one for the Legion. LaBuick said 2018 will be a special one for the Legion and the Moose Jaw community as they are celebrating 100 years of Remembrance Day in the city. He said the Legion will be focused on making Remembrance Day this year very special for the city and surrounding areas. “For 2018, we are celebrating 100 years of Remembrance Day in Moose Jaw. The first Remembrance Day in the city was started in 1919. This year will be our 100th Remembrance Day celebration and we will be commemorating all year. A committee has already been put together to do something a little bit more special to mark Remembrance Day later this year. We always like to put on a very special show every year but to be celebrating the 100th year is remarkable and we want to make it one that will stand out.” He said meetings have already started and the Legion is looking to get the support of the wider community to mark this celebratory milestone. “The 100th year only comes around once and we are going to make it a special one that the city will remember. We are already in meetings on how we can make this year very special and we are looking forward to it. We want to promote it throughout the year because I think it is very incredible that this sized community has been marking this important event for 100 years,” he said.
Persons can also volunteer with the Legion to help make this year’s Remembrance Day a success and one for the books. “We’re looking for support from members of the community to help out. We’ll need all kinds of volunteers to set this up so that the whole community can be involved. If anyone wants to volunteer, call our office and we’ll let you know how you can help out. We just want to make it very special for Moose Jaw and surrounding areas and get as many people as possible to show up for that special day,” LaBuick added.
