M&M Food Market’s new owner to continue providing fine foods to Moose Jaw

- Sasha-Gay Lobban

M&M Meat Shops, now known as M&M Food Market, located at 59-1235 Main Street N. has welcomed a new owner, Sheri Tangan, to the Canadian franchise. Tangan officially took over the business on Nov. 27 last year, ahead of the recent busy holiday season. The previous owner Gary Straub retired after 18 years of operating the popular franchise.

Tangan is looking forward to providing the same service to the Moose Jaw community, adding a new face to the brand as the franchise transitions to M&M Food Market. “We became the new franchise owners on Nov. 27. The previous owner was retiring and as a result, earlier last year, we started the transition and we officially started operating in November, just in time for the busy holiday season.”

Tangan has been working in tax and accounting for 25 years, from which she operated her own business for the last 10 years. “I’ve been in taxing and accounting for about 25 years. The last 10 of those, I operated my own tax and accounting business. I worked from home and I had a number of small businesses and clients that I did their taxes, year-ends and book keeping and after a number of years of doing that, I thought I’d go into owning and operating at least one business and M&M Food Market was the business/franchise I chose to get into.” “This is my first business venture that I’m operating with employees. I’ve been self-employed and worked on a number of government reporting and more, so this is my very first venture that I’ve decided to operate. I have worked in retail prior to taxes and accounting so retail is not brand new for me,” she said. “Even though I’m the main person operating the business, it is family oriented. My sons and husband are involved from time-to-time,” Tangan added.

She says even though it has been very busy since she took over in the busy holidays, the support has been great. “It has been very busy since I took over the business, mostly because of the holiday season. The holiday season is the busiest time for M&M Food Market in the general chain across Canada. I came in at the busiest time. It had its challenges but it was also a great time to learn a lot. Because it is a franchise, there’s a lot of support from the company’s head office.”

There is also much to look forward to at M&M Food Market as the franchise on a whole is re-branding. “The M&M brand itself is doing some re-branding. M&M Meat Shops is what it has been known for but it is changing to ‘M&M Food Market.’ Some stores are renovating to a new concept as well to include healthier eating and other positive things to come.

M&M Food Market Meat Shop (Food Market) has been operated in Moose Jaw since 1999 by the previous owner, Gary Straub. Tangan hopes to continue operating the business for a long time as well. “Hopefully, we’ll continue for many more years, building on the legacy that the previous owner had established.”

Tangan says she will be maintaining the community brand of being very involved and supporting the wider community. “M&M is a community involved business. The previous owner was very involved in the community, M&M was known to be involved in a number of events, schools for example and hosting different events that contributed to the community and I’d love to continue that and restart some things.”

“I am looking forward to serving the community with the same great service of the past 18 years and doing even more in the community by lending my full support. I’m also looking forward to putting a new face to M&M and expanding our clientele,” she added.
