For the first time in school history, the Cornerstone Christian School Falcons are high school girls provincial basketball medalists.

Making their first-ever appearance at Hoopla during the Mar. 26 weekend, the Falcons emerged with the bronze medal after taking a 45-41 victory over Norquay in the third-place game Saturday afternoon.

The contest marked the fourth-straight exceptionally close game for the local

squad, after winning their regional contests 54-45 over Eatonia and 63-61 over Davidson before dropping their Hoopla opener 63-60 against Wilkie on Friday.

Kiara Smith led Cornerstone with 13 points in the bronze medal game, while Kenzie Behrns scored 11.

A day earlier, the Falcons had 21 points from Behrns in their tough loss, while Erica Kaminski scored 17 and Ashley Breitkreuz put up 10.

The news was just as good for the Central Cyclones at the 4A girls provincial championships in Melfort, as they took a 64-47 victory over Meadow Lake in their bronze medal game.

Central opened their tournament with a 97-60 loss to Regina Harvest City, pretty much thanks to two players — Harvest City’s Navaeh Ferrara Horne put up 38 points in their semifinal win, while Asia Wells had 29.

The Cyclones had 13 points each from Lind-Z Detubio and Lilly Matthies to go along with 12 from Ava Nichols.

Facing a team with players not putting up Kobe and LeBron numbers, Central fared much better Saturday morning, holding the entire Spartans roster under double digits on their way to the bronze medal.

Malea Kletzel led Central with 15 points, while Matthies scored 14 and Detubio 12.
