and Kenneth Kushner.
Having been born in the tail end of WWI and then living through the depression, Helen has always been thrifty. She does not waste a thing and shows grear appreciates for all that she has.She was an incredibly resourceful jack of all trades: helping to support the family when she baked and decorated beautiful wedding and birthday cakes & pies, and bridesmaid dresses. She has also, always loved gardening. She has also shown strength of character, and resilience over the years. Her daughter Iris told the Moose Jaw Express that her mother’s strength was even more astounding following a tragedy in the family. “That strength was severely tested when her son Ken died in a tragic accident when he was 20 years old in February 1968. Months later the family moved to Moose Jaw. She often said that the “Newcomers” saved her sanity. In some ways, this was the beginning of her community involvement in Saskatchewan.”
Since then, Helen has been heavily involved in the com- munity of Moose Jaw. She was past president of The Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League; a member of the Art Guild of Moose Jaw; a volunteer with Providence Place; a volunteer with the Liberals and a recently recognized member of the Ukrainian community on a provincial level by that organization. She has been a great contributor to the Moose Jaw community.
On Friday, September 21, Helen and her family celebrated her milestone 100th.
