DEAR OLIVER

A loving letter from parents to child in honour of Universal Children’s Day

- by Alicia Pereira, Mississauga

These loving parents penned a letter to their young son in celebration of Universal Children’s Day.

This month celebrates Universal Children’s Day and what a child you are. You are a total firecracker! You have captured our hearts with your loud and powerful personality and you have quickly become the centre of our universe!

I know I am your mama—a proud mama at that, so I know I’m a bit biased when I say this, but you are the best child in the universe and we are so proud of you. You are a wild child who can’t seem to sit still but you are also so incredibly loving, smart, compassionate and funny.

We want you to know that life can be beautiful, and you have made ours even better. Sometimes it will be tough, but how you deal with it and get through those tough times is what will make you a better and stronger human being.

I want you to remember that everyone has feelings and it’s so important to be respectful of that and that others are respectful of you. The world needs more love and I have found the answer—it lies in you. If more people thought about children and the future of our planet, the way we all operate would be different.

Life shouldn’t be about fighting with others to make things great again. Instead, it should be about moving the world forward into the acceptance of everyone, loving people for their differences and fighting for what makes all of us unique.

My sweet son, all of your unique qualities are what separate you and make you a dynamic force of goodness in this hurting world. Always remember that in your happiest moments and during your darkest times, we are all there with you in spirit, even if we are not there physically. You have the support of friends, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents and parents who love you more than you will ever really know—more than you think we do, more than you think ordinary people are capable of and that’s because our love for you makes us feel like we have superpowers.

Universal Children’s Day is important because it’s a day that the world remembers that children—just like you—will help to change the world and it’s a reminder to adults that our job is to make sure there is a world worth changing. We take that seriously and promise to always think with your best interests and future at heart.

The world is for everyone to enjoy—it’s a beautiful place and we are so excited that we get to watch you explore it.

Love always,

Mommy and Daddy
