Tracy Long is responsible for leading the integration of Tyco Integrated Fire & Security Canada and SimplexGrinnell which, until October 2013, operated under separate leadership within Tyco. She is focused on growing the business, leveraging the full breadth of Tyco’s portfolio.

“I am most proud of watching the people I have managed, coached and mentored succeed in their careers.”

“One of the biggest barriers is a lack of networks to assist with coaching, mentoring and development. To help create these crucial networks at my current company, I have partnered with other women to build a global Women’s Growth Network that recruits both men and women to promote female leadership.”

“Organizations need to understand and talk about both the problem — the lack of female leadership in the business world — and the business case for more diversity: businesses with more diverse leadership perform better. Then they can develop strategies to build that diversity.”

As head of Canada’s only national multi-partisan organization dedicated to electing more women, Nancy Peckford is creating innovative partnerships, promoting dialogue and is working to improve the number of women who run for political office and win.

“Sustaining an incredibly ambitious, volunteer-led, national notfor-profit organization with nine chapters across the country at a time when the landscape for the sector has changed dramatically, and philanthropic and public sector dollars tend to be scarce.”

“Many women remain reluctant to promote their own talents and expertise. I was asked by a House of Commons Standing Committee to appear as an expert witness alongside two economists on how the Department of Finance was upholding certain commitments on gender equality. I am not an economist and hesitated but I knew I could read between the lines in terms of what the department was saying and what it was actually doing. I accepted and my perspective was very well received.”

“Seek candid feedback from people you trust and respect. Be honest with yourself. What is it that you really want and how can you map out a viable plan to get there? Risk-taking needs to be a part of it. Play the long game.”

Strategic thinking and vision coupled with a

“Gaining the trust and confidence of my partners within a short period of time to act as managing partner of the Calgary office of Davis LLP.”

“Winston Churchill exemplifies the qualities of determination and perseverance in extremely trying times. His quote, ‘We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give’ is one of my favourite guiding principles.”

“As a young lawyer, I was assigned a trial by a senior partner. When I met with the client, he asked who would be conducting the trial. I responded I would, and he told me he thought I was ‘ one of the secretaries.’ I told him, ‘No, I am a fully-trained lawyer and the best person to conduct your trial.’ We won, and I have taken on several assignments with this client since. Sometimes, it just takes an opportunity and one small step at a time to break down barriers.”
