Calgary-based Perhaps tourismthat’s one company reason Andersonwhy Vacations can’t find Newfoundland and Labrador on a map. In May, it published a destination guide to promote its Charms and Treasures of Newfoundland Tour. Unfortunately, the accompanying map was of Cape Breton, which was populated by St. John’s and other communities generally found across the Cabot Strait. CEO Corey Marshall blamed a contractor for the issue. “Although our content management company, whom we contract to create the destination planner series, tries to use the best in technology mapping tools, in this case there was a major technical error,” he said in a statement on May 20. But that probably wasn’t enough for Nova Scotia Liberal MHA Stelman Flynn, who on the previous day expressed his outrage in the House of Assembly. “Revenues to the tune of a billion dollars in the tourism industry is at stake. We have invested millions in advertising in Canadian markets, yet travel specialists cannot even get our location right,” he said. A “billion” dollars? Maybe there’s a math problem here, too.
