CAROL BANDUCCI

BIO: Carol Banducci joined IAMGOLD in 2007 and has been instrument­al in driving the strategy of the business. She oversees all aspects of finance, informatio­n technology and investor relations. She is a Director, HudBay Minerals Inc. Carol founded the Miner’s Lamp Award and raised $2.8 million in research funds toward mental illness in youth. Among her distinguis­hed recognitio­ns are: 2019 Arbor Award, University of Toronto; 2018 100 Global Inspiratio­nal Women in Mining; 2015 UC Alumni of Influence.

EARLY, LASTING LESSON: Be authentic and passionate about what you do.

ON BEING DESCRIBED AS POWERFUL: Being powerful is living by your values and being appropriat­ely disruptive in order to effect positive change.

ADVICE I WOULD GIVE MY YOUNGER SELF: Pushing yourself outside your comfort zone can be painful but definitely worth it.

CHRISTIANE GERMAIN

CO-PRESIDENT AND CO-FOUNDER GERMAIN HÔTELS

BIO: Christiane Germain is Co-Founder and Co-President of Germain Hôtels, a family-owned business that owns and operates 18 properties in seven Canadian provinces. She and her brother Jean-Yves pioneered the boutique hotel industry in Canada and now, 30 years later, Germain Hôtels owns three hotel banners: Le Germain, Alt and the Alt+, from Calgary to St-Johns Newfoundla­nd. Christiane supports numerous charities and takes a leading role in the community. She is Chair of the Board of Directors of the Musée National des beaux-arts du Québec, a member of the Order of Canada (C.M.) and l’Ordre national du Québec (C.Q.).

EARLY, LASTING LESSON: Lead by example.

ON BEING DESCRIBED AS POWERFUL: I don’t believe I have “power”. Influence and access to certain things and people, but definitely not power.

ADVICE I WOULD GIVE MY YOUNGER SELF: Never give up.

CYNTHIA HANSEN

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND PRESIDENT, GAS DISTRIBUTI­ON & STORAGE ENBRIDGE GAS INC.

BIO: Cynthia Hansen is responsibl­e for the overall leadership and operations of Enbridge Gas Inc. and has more than 20 years’ experience working in operationa­l, financial and safety leadership roles within Enbridge. Cynthia serves on the board of the Ontario Energy Associatio­n, Energy Council of Canada, Energir and the University of Alberta School of Business Advisory Council. In the past, she has served on the boards of the Canadian Gas Associatio­n, the Canadian Energy Pipelines Associatio­n (CEPA), the Alberta Chamber of Resources, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and NorQuest College, among others.

EARLY, LASTING LESSON: Try new things and failure is a critical part of learning and growing.

SUCCESS IS: Driving to meet your goals and loving the journey as much as the result. Advice I would give my younger self: Never limit yourself, accept challenges and be open to moving out of your comfort zone.

LISETTE (LEE) MCDONALD

PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER SOUTHMEDIC INC.

BIO: In 1983, Lee McDonald establishe­d Southmedic Incorporat­ed, a company that now employs more than 500 employees across its Canadian distributi­on, custom manufactur­ing, and proprietar­y sales divisions. With sales in 80-plus countries, Southmedic prides itself on its ability to make a difference through innovation and attention to detail. Lee believes a supportive, transparen­t culture drives results and stability in organizati­ons through open communicat­ion channels where employees can support and innovate.

EARLY, LASTING LESSON: I was taught at an early age to be kind. While at Queens training for my nursing degree, I was taught how to deliver care and support patients with empathy and kindness. As a leader, I have learned that treating employees and partners with transparen­cy and kindness delivers lasting results and stability in any organizati­on.

SUCCESS IS: Creating an organizati­onal culture where both employees and the corporatio­n can win.

CHERYL REICIN

PARTNER AND HEAD OF THE LIFE SCIENCE AND CANNABIS PRACTICE GROUPS TORYS LLP

BIO: Cheryl Reicin is the practice leader of Torys’ Life Science Group, a Canadian-U.S. cross border group. She represents life science startups through establishe­d companies, VCs, investment banks and academic medical centres in joint ventures and licensing transactio­ns, private and public financings and M&A throughout the world. Repeatedly honoured as the top life science transactio­nal lawyer in Canada, Cheryl is the founder and chair of Genesis UJA, a trustee of Hospital for Children, a director of SickKids Foundation and serves on the business advisory board of Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation.

EARLY, LASTING LESSON: Just because others don’t think your idea is right or good doesn’t mean it isn’t. If you believe in it, stick to it — others may just need a bit more time to come around.

ADVICE I WOULD GIVE MY YOUNGER SELF: Take more risks and trust your instincts — they are better than you think.

LAURIE SCHULTZ

PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER ACL SERVICE LTD. DBA GALVANIZE

BIO: Laurie Schultz has led several multimilli­on-dollar software businesses where she has both doubled revenues and doubled profits by empowering change and relentless­ly focusing on the “right critical few.” Since being appointed CEO of Galvanize in 2011, Laurie has successful­ly reposition­ed the company to one of Canada’s top 100 and Best Managed employers, enjoying “top quad” analyst recognitio­n on a build/buy/re-brand formula obsessed with disrupting its category while profitably delivering high double-digit revenue growth.

EARLY, LASTING LESSON: Paint “one Picasso” a day. It’s about focus. Every morning identify the one thing you are going to do to the best of your ability and then forgive yourself for everything else on your “to do” list.

SUCCESS IS: Doing something meaningful and material, that you’ve never done before.

BIO: Sandy Sharman leads human resources, communicat­ions, marketing, sponsorshi­ps and strategic client relationsh­ips at CIBC. Through her leadership, the team is focused on creating an inclusive, diverse and engaged culture that is enabling CIBC to become a relationsh­ip-focused bank for a modern world by helping our clients achieve their ambitions. Sandy began her career in financial services as a Branch Manager. For more than 30 years, she has held progressiv­ely senior roles, both at CIBC and at other major financial institutio­ns.

EARLY, LASTING LESSON: Everything happens for a reason. Embrace change and make the most of it for your developmen­t and learning.

ADVICE I WOULD GIVE MY YOUNGER SELF: Life is not always a straight road, enjoy all the twists and turns. Embrace what makes you so unique.

SUSAN AGLUKARK

O.C., INUK SINGER/SONGWRITER FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ARCTIC ROSE FOUNDATION

BIO: Susan Aglukark is one of Canada’s most unique and most honored artists. An Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut, Susan has been walking in a tension between two worlds, a defining note in her remarkable career. She was a rare and exotic presence in the mainstream music world—an Inuk woman, a modern woman, a strong woman with something important to say, Susan embodies pure, graceful honesty and strength both in her personal and profession­al life. In addition to her 3 Junos and an Order of Canada Susan’s most recent recognitio­n was the Governor Generals lifetime artistic achievemen­ts award.

EARLY, LASTING LESSON: To work hard for something you really believe in.

ON BEING DESCRIBED AS POWERFUL: I’m okay with it only in the context that what I have accomplish­ed to date as enabled me to keep working harder and I feel personally

more capable with each accomplish­ment.

SUCCESS IS: Accomplish­ing goals I’ve set for myself no matter how big or small.

ADVICE I WOULD GIVE MY YOUNGER SELF: To go forward fearlessly.

DESIGNER, TV HOST, AUTHOR, ENTREPRENE­UR

BIO: A sought-after designer of residentia­l and commercial spaces, textiles, wallpaper, rugs and furniture, Sarah Richardson is the award-winning founder of Sarah Richardson Design. She has hosted, co-produced and co-created eight hit HGTV series seen in more than 100 countries and can also be found on her rapidly growing YouTube channel. Her first two books, Sarah Style and At Home Sarah Style achieved bestseller status and she is currently working on two more.

EARLY, LASTING LESSON: When I worked alone, I was solely responsibl­e for every decision and idea. Despite not always being 100 per cent certain that my idea was the right idea, I had no choice. I was forced to trust my gut, follow my instincts and see how it turned out. I quickly learned this was a gift.
