The Shirley, Shirley Bo-ber-ley Award

Corporate names are often head scratchers, no more so than when they change due to a merger or rebranding exercise. For example, Newmont Mining Corp. decided not to keep its name when it acquired Goldcorp. for $10 billion in April. The deal created the world’s largest gold miner, so it could be argued that a new name was needed. What did they come up with? Newmont Goldcorp Corp., which sounds a bit like a bunch of seals barking. At least it’s not Truist Bank, the new name for SunTrust Banks and BB&T Corp. after they merged. Or Ovintiv Inc., the new name of Encana Corp. now that the energy giant has moved to the U.S. That’s a harsh way to get rid of any Canadian connection.
