FLASH CADILLAC
The federal, Alberta and British Columbia privacy commissioners took Toronto-based Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd. to task for collecting images of five million shoppers without their consent. The real estate company used embedded cameras inside digital information kiosks at 12 of its malls to collect the images, then used facial recognition software to convert the images into biometric numerical representations of individual faces, which the commissioners said could be used to identify individuals. Cadillac Fairview said it posted stickers saying it was capturing the images, but the commissioners said that wasn’t enough.
