WELCOME ONE, WELCOME ALL

There are some familiar faces populating the new arrivals on this year’s ranking, chief among them Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec at No. 18 and Celestica Inc. at No. 68. Both have long been FP500 members, but Caisse was dropped last year due a lack of data and Celestica was on the Subsidiaries list. Another newbie with old connections is Beneva Inc. (No. 79), which was created through the July 3, 2020, merger of SSQ, Société d’assurance-vie Inc. and La Capitale Civil Service Insurer Inc. to become Canada’s biggest mutual insurance company. The combined entity has 3.5 million members and customers, more than $20 billion in assets under management and over 5,000 employees. One of the more interesting newcomers is Skipthedishes Restaurant Services Inc. (No. 362), which reported a 63.3% increase in revenue to $788 million as people skipped eating at restaurants in favour of ordering in. The Winnipeg-based food delivery service is considered an I.T. company for the purposes of the FP500, since it has been given the same industry code as Uber Technologies Inc. The Subsidiaries list also has some notable new names with a Brookfield flair. Both Brookfield Infrastructure Corp and Brookfield Renewable Corp. used to be Bermuda partnerships, but were transferred out in separate deals. Both companies are listed on the TSX and NYSE and have New York City offices.
