Newman’s betrayal
Re: We Were Never ‘ Best Friends,’ Sept. 19. Peter C. Newman rather patronizingly tells us that there is a difference between feeling betrayed and really getting shafted. He insists he was not Brian Mulroney’s “best friend,” a canard to distract us from the fact that without the friendship there would have been no book. Mr. Newman refers to handshakes and contracts to confirm by technicality his right to publish the tapes. But these matters belong to the law. Betrayal is a thing between persons. All that is missing is the kiss.
