Unspoken Gaza realities
I find it most irksome
that pundits and journalists have failed to observe the obvious during the pathos and misery of the forced reopening of Gaza’s border with Egypt during Israel’s withdrawal.
In re-establishing long-lost contacts with family and friends in Egypt, the unfortunate denizens of the Gaza have proven yet again that the so- called “ Palestinian state” is an ersatz creation with no basis in history. Palestinians already have a homeland: They are either Jordanian or Egyptian. Yes, the Arab world may hold its nose and conspire for the interim to maintain a Jordanian Hashemite monarchy. But this in no way diminishes the fact that Arabs of the West Bank and of Gaza share a common identity with kith and kin in Jordan and in Egypt.
Zoheir Muhsin, head of the PLO Military Operations Department and member of the PLO Executive Council (1977), said it best: “ The existence of a separate Palestinian identity is there only for tactical reasons. The establishment of a Palestinian state is a new expedient to continue the fight against Zionism and for Arab unity.”
To this day nothing has changed. The misery of the “Palestinians” is a direct consequence of malice aforethought by a venal Arab leadership bent and determined to prevent a peaceful two-state solution in the Middle East. Thomas Mueller, Rothesay, N. B.
