T H E N E W G OVERNOR- GENERAL
ORDER OF CANADA
Michaëlle Jean rests her hand on her lapel, just above the Order of Canada, as an acknowledgement of applause after being sworn in on Parliament Hill. As Governor-General, Ms. Jean and her husband become Companions of the Order of Canada. Established in 1967, the award is administered by the Governor-General with the assistance of an advisory council. It is granted to “Canadian citizens for outstanding achievement and service to the country or to humanity at large.”
A GREETING, A FAREWELL
Governor-General Michaëlle Jean is greeted by outgoing governorAdrienne Clarkson at the start of Ms. Jean’s swearingceremony on Parliament Hill yesterday. Usually the previous governor-general leaves Rideau Hall well before the successor is sworn in, but in a break with tradition Ms. Clarkson asked for — and was given — permission to attend the investiture. It was the first time in more than a century that the departing governorattended the swearing-in ceremony.
A SURPRISE, AFTER ALL
Michaëlle Jean wore a sober black suit and white shirt by Philippe Dubuc for the pomp and ceremony of her installation as Governor-General. The black wool suit featured a fitted jacket with piping and raw-edge details. The ankle-length skirt had front and back buttoned slits. The 48-year-old former journalist had intended to wear an outfit by designer Yves Jean Lacasse, but she cancelled her order after he gave Montreal’s The Gazette a sneak peak of three outfits.
