T H E N E W G OVERNOR- GENERAL
A CHILD AT RIDEAU HALL
Marie-Éden, Michaëlle Jean’s six-year-old daughter, reacts to the noise of the Howitzers during the 21-gun salute on Parliament Hill yesterday during her mother’s swearing-in ceremony. Marie-Éden, who was adopted from Haiti by Ms. Jean and her husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, will be the first young child living in Rideau Hall in more than two decades. A dog will also be part of the family, a specific request from MarieÉden after she learned she would be moving to Ottawa.
THE STATE LANDAU
The G-G waves from a Royal Canadian Mounted Police-escorted, horse-drawn landau after she was sworn in during a ceremony in Ottawa. The state landau was built in the 1890s and sold to Earl Grey when he was appointed the ninth Governor-General to Canada. When Grey completed his tenure of office, he donated the landau to the Canadian government for escorting ambassadors, heads of state, governors-general, royalty and for the opening of Parliament.
SEATING ARRANGEMENTS
The installation of the Governor-General included some awkward seating for Peter MacKay and Belinda Stronach. The Conservative MP and his former girlfriend, now a Liberal Cabinet minister, had a falling out earlier in the year — just as Ms. Stronach left the Conservative party and joined the Liberals. Ms. Stronach, who has inserted her own classic style to the House of Commons, was wearing a dark suit and white shirt for the ceremony — similar to the G-G’s attire.
