SOLDIER JAILED IN SERBIA AFTER LOSING FIGHTTO STAY IN CANADA
Toronto A Serb paramilitary soldier, who fled to Ontario after being accused of taking part in the massacre of Kosovo villagers in 1999, arrived back in Belgrade yesterday escorted by a pair of Canadian immigration officers. Dejan Demirovic, 30, an alleged member of the Scorpions paramilitary group, was arrested and jailed upon his arrival in Serbia, according to local media reports, ending his four-year fight to stay in Canada as a refugee. Mr. Demirovic flew to Canada in 2001 and lived in Windsor, Ont. but on Jan. 14, 2003, he was arrested by Canadian authorities after Serbia alleged he had murdered 14 ethnic Albanian women and children in Podujevo. The Canadian government ordered his deportation on Sept. 15, 2004, for “violating human rights [and] crimes against humanity.” A Federal Court of Canada judge dismissed his last avenue of appeal on Sept. 20. Anna Pape, a spokeswoman for the Canada Border Services Agency, confirmed that two immigration escorts had accompanied Mr. Demirovic on a flight that left Toronto’s Pearson airport at about 5 p.m. Tuesday.
