MOB SHOUTING ‘ KILL! KILL!’ STORMS PRISON HOLDING BALI BOMBERS

-

Kerobokan, Indonesia Hundreds of furious Balinese chanting “Kill! Kill!” stormed a prison yesterday holding inmates convicted of the 2002 bombings on the Indonesian island. The lynch mob, summoned by text message on the third anniversary of the attacks, tore down the steel gate of the jail but was prevented from entering the building itself. They demanded the immediate execution of three men — Amrozi bin Nurhasyim, Imam Samudra, and Ali Ghufron — who have already been sentenced to death for their part in the attacks, which killed more than 200 people. All three men have since been fighting appeals. Anger over their delayed executions has heightened on Bali since a triple suicide bombing this month, when 20 people were murdered, five of them foreigners. Wearing formal Balinese dress of sarongs and intricately tied headbands, the protesters chanted, “Kill Amrozi! Kill! Kill!” and “ We have been waiting for three years.” At the height of the demonstration, about 1,000 people were gathered outside. Three rows of riot police, equipped with batons and shields, guarded the main entrance, with reinforcements sent in later. Earlier, at a more formal marking of the anniversary, about 400 survivors and relatives of victims of the 2002 bombings paid their respects at a memorial in Kuta Beach, close to two nightclubs that were blown up.
