BAY OF QUINTE

- BY CONNIE ADAIR

An exceptional waterfront cottage with sauna and cellar: $1.6-million.

Rednersville Road is to Belleville what Rosedale is to Toronto — there are a lot of notables who live there, says listing agent Richard Ling of Harvey Kalles Real Estate.

Rednersville Road runs east from Carrying Place, just south of Trenton, to the Bay Bridge at Belleville. “Our residence is about three or four minutes from the Bay Bridge where there are many prestigious homes and mansions,” says homeowner David Stewart, who shares the home with his wife, Leone.

The Stewarts were drawn to the property for its waterfront location on the Bay of Quinte. Mr. Stewart says he and Leone relax in their cedar-lined gazebo and enjoy sunrises, sunsets and a view of passing sailboats.

According to an American sport fishing magazine, the Bay of Quinte at Belleville/ Prince Edward County is one of the two best Walleye fishing grounds in North America, he says. “One can also travel by boat to the Florida Keys from our dock without interruption. We personally know several people who have done so.”

The water is deep — four to six feet at shore and 10 to 12 feet farther out. The property has a ramp and a marine railway. Mr. Stewart says his only regret is he doesn’t have a helicopter pad, but there is plenty of room to build one.

The couple had the three-bedroom, five-bathroom home custom built and the property landscaped complete with waterfalls, multilevel cedar and stone decks, a firepit and an inground pool.

“Anything Dave and Leone touch [features] the best of everything,” Mr. Ling says. “They had the best builder and the best landscaper.”

The manufacturer of the paving stones used on the waterside and at the front of the house was so impressed by the landscaper’s design, the projects were photographed and used in marketing materials for three years, Mr. Stewart says.

The best regional artisans were used to finish the stone and cedar board-and-batten home, Mr. Ling says. The home features tongue-and-groove white oak floors from Germany, water views from all of the principal rooms, a great room, a billiards room and a study.

“Leone’s favourite area is our somewhat lavish kitchen, complete with granite countertops, maple cabinetry and high-end appliances,” Mr. Stewart says. It’s open to the great room, with its fireplace and view of the bay through windows and doors.

His favourite part of the house is the lower level, which has a sauna, a wine cellar, an entertainment area, a fireplace in the lounge area and a complete exercise/gym facility. The wine cellar features an artisan’s mural.

An increasing number of buyers are recognizing the benefits of looking east for waterfront properties vs. a trek north from Toronto. There is less traffic and properties are more affordably priced. However, prices are increasing to reflect the increasing popularity of the area, Mr. Ling says. “The home is ideal for international jet-setters like the Stewarts.”
