Re: Curses For Cursive’s Decline, Andrew Coyne, June 25. While reading Andrew Coyne’s excellent commentary, I remembered that Shelby Foote, author of The Civil War and the basis of the Ken Burns documentary, wrote that three-volume history completely with pen and ink. The folly of abandoning one of the most fundamental of skills is now evident. It will be interesting to see how educators, more concerned with “higher-order thinking skills.” will ensure that future students mark their signatures with very creative X’s when it seems they are now unable to sign their own names Doretta Wilson, executive director, Society for Quality Education, Toronto.
