Prairie kiteboarding

- AELLA WHITE editorial@mediaplanet.com

There may not be as many ski hills as there are in other parts of Canada, but the Prairies has answered this by embracing the exhilarating sport of kiteboarding, where the season is open 365 days a year.

What is different about Kiteboarding in Saskatchewan?

We kite on water and on the snow on either skis or boards! The wide open spaces and thousands of freshwater lakes in the Prairies, combined with a generous supply of wind make it a kiteboarder’s paradise. We’ll even kite onwinter nights; if conditions are ideal, we will be out kiteboarding in the dark with flashing lights on our kites.

What do you need to kiteboard?

Not as much as you would think! You need the same gear you would for the ski hill, including a helmet. Other than that, a harness to attach yourself to the kite, and of course, the kite! Also, since speed is a factor, with skiers on the snow reaching up to 120kph, it is important to get accredited lessons before starting out.

What makes kiteboarding unique? Who should try it?

The sport is so dynamic, it takes the best parts of so many sports & combines them, resulting in this very exhilarating activity. Kiteboarding is a sport for almost anyone who is reasonably fit & looking for a thrilling outdoor activity or an accessible way to ski, snowboard, wake board or surf.
