The economics of separation

-

Re: PQ Won’t Rule Out Referendum, Graeme Hamilton, March 7. Anglos here in Quebec are sensing the profound angst from the Rest of Canada regarding a possible PQ majority on Apr. 7, followed by a third referendum on the question of Quebec sovereignty. Here’s the good news: Quebecers are fully aware of their province’s desperate economic situation, which soaks up billions of dollars in transfer payments annually. There will be no need for the Rest of Canada to play hardball with the Quebec premier after Apr. 7 because there will be a clear-cut majority federalist result, with Phillipe Couillard as the leader.

G. DeWolf Shaw, Montreal.

The way to get the PQ out of power is by spreading the word to soft nationalists and the population at large that the sole agenda of this administration is separation. It is not about good government, health care, the economy or any other vital elements of a functioning province. The PQ will do and say anything to get elected; they marched with the students for free tuition, and they promised no annual health contribution fee. Within a short time after getting elected, these promises were abandoned.

The PQ operates a machine of smoke and mirrors that has to be exposed. We federalists cannot sit on our hands and let this province be lost.

Sheldon Miller, Montreal.
