Gunning for clarity
Re: Amnesty Isn’t Good Enough, editorial, March 7. This editorial rightfully points out the audacity and authoritarian nature of the RCMP’s seemingly arbitrary gun ban. Not only have these latest antics caused great consternation among law-abiding gun owners, but they also illustrate the absurdity of trying to differentiate between “good” and “bad” guns.
These misidentified “assault rifles” are functionally no different from their prettier cousins, commonly used for hunting. The laws should be changed to reflect that. Gun owners are fed up with the myriad of asinine regulations preventing them from enjoying their hobby. The RCMP should be removed from this business and gun classification restored to a simple, pre-1978 system.

A good editorial but it ignores the key reality: As Canadians, we have no clear constitutional right to private property. A gun seizure without compensation would not occur if we had that right; the RCMP would never undertake some sort of mass confiscation if they had to pay for the property seized.
