SHELF LIFE

-

Colourful; peppy; crammed full of exotic sensations — and that’s just the website. Tajin is a global brand that specializes in Mexican seasonings, particularly chilies. This fruit topper contains ground chilies, salt and lime — it is, in effect, powdered hot sauce, all-natural and not too explosive (we selected the mild variety). A Mexican tradition, these little grains of super-flavour give a spicy boost to just about everything, from fruits to salads to soups to stews. Taste-wise, Tajin delivers a kick of chili spice with a pop of lime. The label suggests using the seasoning on apples, oranges, mangoes, watermelon, pineapple and cantaloupe; the website offers about a zillion recipes and uses, from barbecue ribs to chili smoothies to amped-up ice cream. Shelf Life loved it on mangoes, and adored it in our own apple spinach salad. It brightened up our mayonnaise and brought the house down on grilled corn on the cob. And drinks — did we mention the margaritas? Or the extreme juice? The only drawback with this product is finding it; individual orders aren’t available online, so thrill seekers will have to search the imported food aisles and specialty stores. For Shelf Life, the extra effort is worth it — Tajin’s magic powder has become the newest addition to our winter survival kit.
