B.C. officer charged in connection with fatal standoff outside casino

-

A Vancouver-area police officer has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a fatal standoff outside a casino two years ago. Const. Jordan MacWilliams, who works in Delta, appeared in court on Monday and was granted bail. He is accused of murder in the death of Mehrdad Bayrami, 48, who was shot on Nov. 8, 2012. Police were called to the Starlight Casino in nearby New Westminster after reports that shots had been fired in the parking lot. Police blocked off the area and spent several hours attempting to negotiate an end to the standoff. By the day’s end, B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office, which handles serious cases involving police officers, announced a suspect had been shot. Mr. Bayrami later died in hospital.
