Deep tones with a jolt of colour are employed in the Kelly model for Averton Homes

- By Lisa Van de Ven

“Modern” and “minimalistic” are words Christine Chao uses to describe the Kelly model home at Victoria Highlands in Mount Albert. To give the home modern appeal, she says, she incorporated minimalistic elements with “simple clean lines to create a timeless space.” The interior design coordinator with Averton Homes says “the colour palette is composed of primarily neutrals with deep dark tones and pops of bold colour.” In the kitchen of the 2,545-square-foot home, she opted for dark cabinets paired with polished chrome accents, as well as integrated appliances and a backsplash in the same stone as the fireplace wall of the open-concept family room. “The target market was new homebuyers – a younger market,” Ms. Chao adds. Homes at the Averton project range from 1,530 to 3,342 square feet and from $502,990 to $669,990. The sales office is at 19103 Hwy. 48, Mount Albert, and opens Monday to Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m., Friday by appointment and weekends from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 416-924-0110 or visit victoriahighlands.com.

With high backs “to portray a more elegant appeal,” the family room’s two side chairs are upholstered in the same taupe micro-suede as the sofa between, creating a unified effect. Orange accent pillows add pop to the space. “Orange accents are very on trend,” Ms. Chao adds. Featuring a wood finish, the side table and matching coffee table add warmth to the space, while chrome accents complement the legs of the sofa and chairs. Those same accents are carried through into the open kitchen, creating a cohesive modern design throughout the principal rooms. “This room has clean architectural lines, [and] an uncluttered feel, with added texture to add personality,” Ms. Chao says of the family room. And this feature fireplace wall adds a focal point to the space, with a stone surround flanked by sleek built-ins of dark wood and glass shelving. A coffered ceiling with cornice moulding “creates a sense of balance to the atmosphere,” Ms. Chao says. While the ceilings bring eyes up, the dark-grey-tinged hardwood floor grounds the room; it’s installed in opposite directions between the kitchen and family room to delineate the spaces. The lighting comprises fixtures with “very simple, yet unique” pendants, Ms. Chao says of the matching fixtures from Sescolite Lighting featured in the master bedroom. The grouping of glass bulbs at the centre of the room is repeated with a single pendant above each nightstand. “There is a soft combination of modern and old glam” in the master bedroom, Ms. Chao says. To create that effect, she brought in this bedroom set from The Brick, featuring black furniture and an upholstered leather headboard. Damask-patterned bedding and drapes, also in black, complete the look.
