What about the other 50 per cent?

-

Re: Canada Post’s Figures Are Not The Whole Story, letter to the editor, May 21. According to letter-writer Alan Mew, a full 50 per cent of single family homes currently receive home delivery and these folks, including the elderly, will be forced “to walk outdoors in the freezing Canadian winter to collect their mail.” Welcome to the world of the other 50 per cent who have been doing this for many years. Why are we never mentioned?

Ed Chong, Ancaster, Ont. Letter-writer Alan Mew feels sorry for the elderly who might lack home mail delivery in the future. Has he, or anyone else who is complaining about lack of doorto-door delivery, given any thought to the person who delivers that mail?

My son-in-law is a mail carrier and the hardships he experiences on his route are unbelievable. He has to walk about 10 kilometres every day, in all weather. He is outside anywhere from six to eight hours, depending on the amount of mail he has to deliver. He has sprained his back, twisted his ankle and suffered frost bite. He comes home exhausted, and no wonder. If anyone is facing “undue hardship and danger,” it is the mail carriers.
