LEADING OFF: SHE’S NUMBER ONE

-

Eugenie Bouchard is the most bankable athlete in the world, according to a British magazine. The Montreal tennis star sits at the top of SportsPro’s list of the most marketable athletes in the world, above even Novak Djokovic, Usain Bolt and Cristiano Ronaldo. The magazine ranked the athletes on monetary value, age, country of origin, charisma, hunger for the spotlight and openness to sponsorships outside his or her home country. Bouchard, 21, who has signed with the WMEIMG agency, was No. 13 on the list last year, when she reached the semi-finals of the Australian and French Opens and was a finalist at Wimbledon. She recently snapped a six-match losing streak with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas in second-round action at the Italian Open. She is the sixth seed for the French Open that starts Monday. Following her in the top 10, in order, are: soccer star Neymar, golfer Jordan Spieth, swimmer Missy Franklin, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, cricketer Virat Kohli, NBA star Stephen Curry, tennis player Kei Nishikori, heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and sprinter Usain Bolt.
