Pedalling for cancer research
The eighth Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer was another epic success. The two-day cycling event, which covers more than 200 kilometres throughout Ontario’s picturesque countryside, continues to gain momentum year after year.
Money raised goes to benefit the Princess Margaret, a leader in the fight against cancer and the largest institution in Canada exclusively devoted to cancer treatment, research and education. Personalized Cancer Medicine, an integrated approach to cancer care that focuses on the unique nature of each patient, is becoming a reality. Money raised will go toward high content clinical trials such as the world-class tumour bank, an advanced molecular profiling laboratory and a drug development program.
The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer announced 4,853 riders raised $19 million for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Funds raised through Canada’s largest cycling fundraiser support Personalized Cancer Medicine, the new gold standard in cancer care, at the Princess Margaret, across Ontario and around the world.
“Forty per cent of Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime,” said Paul Alofs, president and CEO, Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. “As one of the top five cancer research centres in the world, the Princess Margaret is determined to continue asking the question that is at the basis of all research: ‘ Why?’ Why is in our DNA at the Princess Margaret. It is our mission to conquer cancer in our lifetime.”
Bright lights taking the challenge included Tim Hockey, group head, Canadian banking and wealth management, TD Bank Group, and president and CEO, TD Canada Trust; David Cheesewright, president and CEO of Wal-Mart International; Jochen Tilk, president and CEO, Potash Corp of Saskatchewan; Paul Martin, president and CEO, Detour Gold; Dr. Neil Fleshner, head of the division of urology, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre; Glenn Ives, chairman of Deloitte Canada; Lawrence Zimmering, president and CEO, AutoCapital Canada Inc.; Tom Milroy, former CEO, BMO Capital Markets, BMO Financial Group; Cam Fowler, group head, Canadian personal and commercial banking, BMO Financial Group; Glenn Beaumont, president, Enbridge Gas Distribution; and Dr. Jonathan Irish, chief of surgical oncology, University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital.
