Genomics spotlight

-

Dr. Paola Neri, a University of Calgary researcher is conducting exciting research involving genome sequencing. “The goal is to understand why myeloma behaves differently in patients. By looking at genomic biomarkers we can tell in advance if patients will respond to certain treatments. “We are doing this, so we can achieve better outcomes and survival,” says Dr. Neri. “If we know in advance how best to treat patients with myeloma, we can save patients from harmful side effects caused by the drugs and also save the health care system money.”

Genome sequencing used to be expensive and took a long time, but now it’s much more cost effective and only takes about three hours. The Myeloma Canada Research Network’s first trial, MCRN001, included a genomic component to help identify which patients responded better to treatment. More research will help find a cure, and make a real difference. This is what motivates Dr. Neri and her colleagues to continue the research.
