Feeling it

Texture brings the design to life in the lower penthouse model at Gibson Square in North York By Lisa Van de Ven

While Gibson Square’s LPH603 model may be “clean-lined modern,” Bryon Patton didn’t want something cold and stark. The interior designer aimed for “comfortable and real” in the 1,313-square-foot space, designed for a mix of demographics from young professionals to more mature buyers. “We wanted to show that purchasers can live a beautiful lifestyle in a carefree condominium home,” says Patton, who worked on the suite with associates Sean Swayze and Ruth Lynch, all of Bryon Patton and Associates. The design features a collected feel, with grey tones offset with white, red and royal blue — all brought to life with texture. “We have layered chenille, silk, flannel, linen, cotton and wool together to create visual interest,” Patton says. Remaining penthouses at the Menkes Developments site range from 1,313 to 1,926 square feet and $836,990 to $1,350,990. The sales office is located at 4954 Yonge St., Toronto and open Monday to Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. and weekends from noon to 5 p.m. Call 416-730-9722 or visit menkes.com. Inspired by the designs of Philippe Starck and created from moulded plastic, this black chair is “very sculptural,” Patton says, and “adds a sense of sophistication, yet whimsy, to the room.” And while the chair’s design may be modern, it also incorporates a vintage vibe, he adds. Purchased from W Studio, the living room’s area rug integrates the colours found throughout the space, with grey, charcoal and white wool woven through. Installed on a diagonal, it visually expands the space, while a sleek glass-and-chrome coffee table lets the rug shine through. Hung above a contemporary grey sofa, this limited edition abstract giclée print from PI Creative Art adds punch to the living room. “The bold, carefree, splashy colours contrast nicely with the tailored lines of the sofa and provides vibrant accent and energy to the room,” Patton says. The bedroom lamps are “a great example of form and function,” the designer says. “Not only do they provide beautiful, ambient light but they are sculpture.” Featuring bases of pewter mercury glass, combined with silver mylar shades, the curves contrast with the more tailored bed. “This corner demonstrates a good use of space,” Patton says of the small office area he incorporated into the master bedroom. There, he featured a simple desk with a red leather Eames chair. “[It] would also work well for a makeup table or an armoire,” he adds. The handmade folded paper collage above the desk was inspired by origami, and flows well with the other art in the suite, Patton says. “The texture of the folded paper is playful and the white with black and red accents is perfect for the scheme,” he adds.
