THE BELOVED CASSEROLE DISH TURNS 100 AND YOU’RE INVITED TO CELEBRATE
Pyrex cookware has been with us for 100 years, after Corning Glass Works inadvertently found that the heat-resistant glass used for rugged railroad lanterns also made a lovely sponge cake. The brilliant but oft-overlooked Corning Museum of Glass (cmog.org) in Upstate New York is marking the centennial with an exhibition devoted to the kitchen staple. The display pulls from the museum’s 2,000-piece collection of Pyrex, from the first pie dish to the ubiquitous measuring cup, rounded out with decades of advertisements, design drawings, cookbooks and catalogues. This humble product isn’t the only reason to go: The CMOG — the world’s most comprehensive collection of glass — houses all sorts of items, from a beautiful 2,500-year-old blue amphora to stunning contemporary art pieces.
