Good as gold

In the model at One Old Mill, classic glamour sets an appropriately dramatic tone

- By Lisa Van de Ven

Designer Stella Salvador turned the glamour up in the model suite for One Old Mill. Using a classic colour combination of black and gold in the 2,133-square-foot space, the principal interior designer with developer Tridel Corp. set out to create a mid-century modern design that made a statement. “Paired together, black and gold make for a very dynamic type of space,” she says. “The black gives you drama, the gold gives you polish.” Alongside that dramatic combo, Salvador introduced off-white walls and accents, while large windows and an open-concept layout ensure the space feels light and bright. “The cream tones settle things down,” Salvador says. “It’s all about balancing design elements.” Remaining suites at One Old Mill range from 1,288 to 2,133 square feet, and from $850,000 to $1.95 million. The sales office is located at 1 Old Mill Dr., Suite 529, Toronto, and open Monday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends and holidays from noon to 6 p.m. Call 416-645-7022 or visit tridel.com.

“It’s such a great space for entertaining,” Salvador says, and two full-sized sofas in the living room certainly help that, offering plenty of seating space. Black and gold accent pillows contrast with the off-white sofas, while the coffee table features a mix of metallics, paired with smoky glass.

Black silk wallpaper accentuates a single wall, adding unexpected drama to the dining room. “We wanted to offset the lighter walls,” says Salvador, who contrasted the silk with a large gold-framed mirror from PI Creative Arts and a walnut credenza with pearlescent doors from Elte.

Throughout the suite, custom panelling adds interest to feature walls like this one. “It’s very specific to whatever wall it’s going on,” Salvador says. “You have to think about what art is going to go there.” Here, gold-framed art continues the signature colour palette found throughout the space.

A glass tabletop is paired with a sculptural brushed gold base in this dining table, which Salvador surrounded by Warren Platner-inspired wire mesh chairs in black and brass. “It was important that the chairs work well with the dining table,” she says. “These complement each other very well.”

“Every now and again your eye needs a point at which to rest,” the designer says. These two mid-century modern chairs provide exactly that. A focal point for the room, the black chairs were designed to stand out, with a brass frame and tufted patent-leather finish.

“We wanted a fixture that was more light, that you could see through,” Salvador says. And this gold leaf light fixture from Union Lighting and Furnishings fit that profile. “It’s very sleek, but you can see right through it — it doesn’t take away from everything else,” she says.
